Since 1974

the room.

The lower floor was dug out in the winter of 1973 to make room for a boiler that was never installed. The following year the hotel put a casino in it instead, and it has been running ever since. The ceiling is still low, the cedar is still the original cedar, and the room still holds about as many people as it did then.

That is deliberate. A small floor means the dealers know the regulars by name, the pit boss is somebody you can actually find, and nobody has to walk three minutes to reach a drink. It also means the room fills on a Saturday, so if you want a particular table on a particular night, call ahead and we will hold you a seat.

The casino is part of the hotel, not a separate club. Take the lift down from the lobby, or come in from the north entrance off the car park if you are not staying with us. Coats go in the cloakroom at the bottom of the stairs; it is free and it is staffed until close.

What is on the floor

ninety tables and machines.

Four rooms off one central bar. Limits are posted at the head of every table and the pit will happily talk you through a game you have not played before — there is no charge and no expectation that you sit down afterwards.

when we are open.

The floor opens at eleven every morning. Closing depends on the night and, on a good one, on the room. Last entry is thirty minutes before close.

  1. Eighteen and over, without exception. Government photo identification is checked at the door for everyone who looks under twenty-five, and may be requested again at the cashier. No identification, no entry — the door staff have no discretion on this.
  2. No membership and no cover charge. You do not need to be a hotel guest and you do not need to book. The floor is open to the public during the hours above.
  3. Dress as you would for dinner upstairs. There is no formal dress code. We ask only that you keep shoes on, hoods and hats down, and faces visible to the cameras.
  4. Cash and card at the cashier. The cashier is at the foot of the stairs. There is a limit on card transactions and no credit is extended by the house, to anyone, for any reason.
  5. Phones down at the tables. Calls and photographs are fine anywhere else on the floor, but not at a live table — it is a privacy rule for the other players as much as a house rule.
  6. The room is monitored throughout. Recorded surveillance covers the whole floor and the cashier, as our licence requires. Footage is retained and released only to the regulator or to law enforcement acting within its powers.

Licensing and compliance

under the gambling act 2003.

The casino at Alpine Hearth is licensed and operated in accordance with the Gambling Act 2003 and the conditions attached to our operating licence. Everything on the floor — the games we may offer, the way stakes and payouts are set, who may be admitted, how we keep our records — sits inside that framework, and we are audited against it.

Responsible gaming

play safe.

Gambling is entertainment. It is not income, it is not a way out of a difficult month, and it is not something the house wants anybody doing with money they need. The casino makes more from people who come back next year than from anyone who empties their account tonight, and we would rather you left early than left short.

  1. Set the number before you go down. Decide what the evening is worth to you, bring that, and leave the cards upstairs. The cashier will not extend credit and the house will not lend.
  2. Self-exclusion, on the spot. Ask any supervisor or the duty manager to place you on the self-exclusion register. It can be done in a few minutes, it covers the whole floor, and you can set it for six months, a year, or permanently. Reversing it takes a cooling-off period; that is the point of it.
  3. Limits you set yourself. Tell the desk a visit limit or a spend limit and we will hold you to it. It is not recorded anywhere beyond our own floor system.
  4. We will step in. Our staff are trained to notice chasing, extended sessions and distress, and are expected to intervene. If a supervisor asks you to take a break, it is not a judgement — it is the job.
  5. Nobody under 18, and no one impaired. Anyone who cannot produce identification, or who is visibly intoxicated, will not be served on the floor. This is a licence condition and it is not negotiable.
  6. Help, away from us. If gambling has stopped being a choice, talk to somebody independent of this building. Ask the front desk or the duty manager and we will give you current confidential helpline and counselling details, in a sealed envelope if you would rather nobody saw.

hold me a seat.

Tables, the poker list, the high-limit salon, or a room upstairs for afterwards — one number does all of it, and somebody picks up at any hour.
