Alpine Hearth opened in 1912 as a stopping house for people heading west, and the idea has not moved much since: a warm room, a hot meal, and somebody at the desk who remembers your name. What has grown is the building. One hundred and twenty-eight rooms and suites, three kitchens working off a single larder, a spa fed by our own thermal well, four halls that take everything from board meetings to two-hundred-seat weddings, and a licensed casino on the lower floor. All of it under one roof, all of it a short walk from the lobby fire we keep lit from October through May.

Cedar, wool, deep windows and a bed you will resent leaving. Nothing here is themed — it is simply built well and kept warm.

Three kitchens, one larder. The Long Table serves a single changing menu at seven. Ember Grill runs late for people coming up off the gaming floor. Larder & Bakehouse opens at six for bread, eggs and coffee strong enough to matter. Guests and walk-ins are both welcome; the Cellar Bar keeps its own hours.

The casino has been part of this house since the lower floor was dug out in 1974. Ninety tables and machines, a poker room that runs Thursday through Sunday, and a high-limit salon behind the brass doors. It is a small room on purpose — the dealers know the regulars, the bar is four steps from any seat, and the kitchen upstairs will still feed you at one in the morning.
Take the lift down from the lobby or come in from the north entrance off the car park. There is no membership, no cover and no dress code beyond common sense; the casino floor is part of the hotel, not a separate club.

Four halls, a terrace that holds two hundred, and a kitchen that has cooked through more first dances than it has kept count of.
